Heartburn is a terribly painful and uncomfortable condition that occurs in the center of your chest. It is a burning sensation that is caused by the acid that goes up through your esophagus. Those who’ve experienced it believe that foods like sweets and even vegetables cause heartburn.
Heartburn can happen to many people. Others seldom experience it while others go through it a lot. If this is the case, then it is best to go and have yourself checked by a doctor to determine the causes. You will also need to write a food journal based on what you eat. It is important to note what you’ve just eaten right before you have experienced the heartburn.
There are many factors that can cause heartburn, and food is one of them. Other factors are smoking, alcohol, stress, and carbonated beverages. Notice that heartburn is more likely to occur right after eating a large meal. It also occurs when you go to bed right after eating.
Common types of food that cause heartburn would be foods that are fatty, spicy, highly acidic and fried. For example, peppers are known to be spicy, but even the sweet kinds of pepper can cause heartburn since they can cause inflammation in the body. This will cause the body to create more acid which will trigger the heartburn.
Vegetables and heartburn
Vegetables are generally okay and do not typically cause heartburn. However, if they are fried or are cooked in butter and other oils then they could trigger heartburn. There are also certain vegetables such as peas, carrots, green beans, cauliflower, and spinach that can cause the burning sensation in your chest. Others would be onions, tomatoes and peppers.
Certain vegetables cause heartburn as well as fruits. Fruits that are acidic can also cause heartburn, such as tangerines and oranges, although if eaten in moderation they generally do not trigger it.
Here are some symptoms that you will likely experience when you happen to have heartburn:
- A burning chest pain that can spread to your neck and throat.
- A bitter, painful liquid that rises up your chest all the way to the back of your mouth.
- Difficulty in swallowing.
When eating, here are some tips that you can apply so that you will lower your risk of suffering from heartburn:
- Do not eat within 2 hours before you are about to go to sleep.
- Eat in small, bite-sized pieces.
- Chew your food slowly and thoroughly.
- Eat more frequently, but in smaller portions to keep the stomach acid at bay.
- Eat more fiber rich, whole grain food, and low acid fruits and vegetables.
- Try to incorporate a mixture of fruit and vegetables into your meals, especially colorful kinds. There are digestive enzymes in these types of food which will help the body break down food easier.
- Some vegetables cause heartburn, but others can actually reduce the effect of heartburn. Prepare them through steaming, roasting or eat them raw. Avoid tomatoes though because they tend to cause the stomach acid to react.
